Rachel Whiteread Drawings: Exhibition Walkthrough - Hammer Museum

Rachel Whiteread Drawings: Exhibition Walkthrough - Hammer Museum

I just saw the show this weekend and it is so beautiful. It's amazing to be able to see her thought process, the way she uses drawing and the objects that she feels compelled to collect. The way that the show has been curated also adds to your understanding of her practice. As artists it would be really worth for you to take a look at this show. Look at the way an idea can grown over time, take different directions and shapes. highly recommended going to the walk through of the exhibition on April 18th @ 3:00 PM.

  1. I’ve always been interested to know about the process of an artist’s work therefore I like to search for their early sketches of a finished painting which really helps me to understand how they felt and saw the object of their finished work. In Rachel’s case it’s even more interesting since she turned her sketches into solid sculptures, which are mostly made out of ordinary items. I’d love to see her work.

  2. I went to the Renoir exhibit at the LACMA. It highlighted Renoir's work in the 20th century. He focused on figures, especially the female nudes, which were not necessarily precise to form. I also breezed through the American Stories exhibit. These were the first painting exhibits I went to while taking Painting I class. I was more aware of the mixing of colors, the blending, brush strokes, etc. I've always loved painting exhibits, but now I appreciate and understand it more.

  3. It's great that you are starting to really see painting with new eyes. You are now deconstructing the image rather than just taking in the illusion of the piece! I'm so glad to hear this!
