Introduction and explanation of the course outline, show and discuss art supplies and materials list & presentation on contemporary painting.
HW: Buy materials and bring in 2 supports (canvas board), Mars black and Titanium white paint, thinner, palette, brushes, rags, jars, ink sketchbook.
2. Feb 22nd
Project: Begin Black and White paintings
Demo: Setting up a palette, canvas, and how to use mediums. Will also talk about framing with paper viewfinder and blocking in.
Class: Students start black and white paintings
HW: Bring back b&w still life, and black ink. In sketchbook make 4 sketches with black ink from still lifes that you set up at home.
3. March 1st
Project: Finish Black and White paintings
Demo: Working class
Class: Finish black and white paintings. Do preliminary drawings and ink drawings in sketchbook working with a monochromatic palette.
HW: Bring black, white, red, and blue paint and 2 new supports (canvas boards). In sketchbook make 4 monochromes from a still lifes set up at home. Bring 5 objects for monochromes.
4. March 8th
Project: Begin Monochromatic painting
Demo: Set up a monochromatic palette. Examples and glossary provided. Talk about Monochromatic
Class: Start Monochromatic paintings. Sketchbook check.
HW: Work on monochromatic paintings.
5. March 15th
Project: Finish Monochromes
Class: Finish Monochromes.
HW: Bring in finished black and white and monochromatic paintings for first critique. + Bring 10 small supports (5 pieces of heavy paper and 5 canvas boards and clips), one big brush, orange acrylic paint, and masking tape. Write one paragraph on what you think is working well in your painting and what is not.
6. March 22nd
Project: First Critique and Preparing supports
Demo: Stretching, priming and tinting supports
Class: Discussion on critiques, what is helpful + what is not. Class Critique.
Priming and tinting paper and canvas boards.
HW: Color assignment. Bring all 10 supports for speed paintings and a full palette
+ First exhibition review due next week!
7. March 29th
Project: Speed painting
Demo: Discussion on speed painting, laying out a full palette.
Class: Will complete 10 small studies from still life during class
HW: In sketchbooks 3 collage/drawing that explore repetition with goods and products that you find in magazines. Bring in 4 canvas boards for next class.
8. April 5th
Project: Value Exploration
Demo: Discussion on color values and picture plane.
Class: Students will paint four studies. One with a full range of value from dark to light with most values in between. The second with study will be high in value, the third will be low in value and the last will have very light or very dark values eliminated the middle colors.
HW: In preparation for the repetition painting make 4 studies in your sketchbook with the objects that you will be working with in different configurations (ex: shoes, glasses, bottles, tools). Bring in new canvas, still life and materials to get started for the next class.
9. April 12th
Class: Working Class. Finish value studies
HW: Make 4 small value studies like the ones that we completed in class.
10.April 19th
Project: Repetition, Rhythm and Space
Demo: Introduce Rhythm with examples and discuss
Class: Paint from personal still life taking into account repetition, negative space and have objects recede in space.
HW: Work on repetition still life
11.April 26th
Project: Finish Repetition, Rhythm and Space
Class: Finish Still life first half of the class and critique second half
HW: 4 self-portrait compositions (will give further instructions), bring in speed paintings, value studies, repetition paintings for critique, bring in new large canvas, source materials, mirror + objects to include in self portrait.
12.May 3rd
Project: Critique / Self-Portrait
Demo: Intro lecture, Mixing Neutral Skin tones, composition, etc…
Class: Turn in second exhibition review & Setting up Self Portraits, lighting, placement of objects, etc…
HW: Make a list of items with which you feel a strong connection. Look at list and select 4 objects. Make sketches of possible additions for your painting.
13.May 10th
Project: Continue Self Portraits
Class: Working class
HW: In your sketchbook make 2 studies of close ups of your face
14.May 17th
Project: Finish Self Portraits
Class: and work on self portrait
HW: Finish paintings. + Second exhibition review due next week!
15.May 24th
Class: Finish any outstanding projects
HW: Bring in Self Portraits, repetition paintings, and sketchbook
