Introduction and explanation of the course outline, show and discuss art supplies and materials list & presentation on contemporary painting.
HW: Buy materials. Bring one small canvas, materials, rags, jars, palettes, and titanium white, mars black, yellow ochre, red oxide. Supplies for stretching and priming canvas and paper.
2. Feb 22nd
Project: (Warm and Cool) Limited Palette Still Life
Demo: Mixing colors with limited palette emphasis on warm and cool colors, emphasis on space and creation of spatial planes
Class: Students start a limited palette still life, emphasis on cool and warm colors and how this relates to light and the effects of light on color.
HW: work on limited palette
3. March 1st
Project: Finish limited palette painting
Demo: Intro into Abstraction and homework emphasis on abstraction (tracing paper, source materials in preparation for abstraction homework)
Class: Wrap up limited palette still lifes
HW: Preparation for Abstraction: 4 abstracted sketches using tracing paper and photos. Bring one small support + sketching and priming supplies (refer to materials list)
4. March 8th
Project: Abstraction
Demo: As a class share and discuss abstraction homework assignment. Demo on stretching, priming, tinting and preparing painting surfaces
Class: Work on abstraction sketch on small support
HW: Prepare one canvas and painting surface.
5. March 15th
Project: Begin Abstraction painting
Class: Turn in “exhibition review” & Begin working on abstraction painting
HW: Work on abstraction painting
6. March 22nd
Project: Continue Abstraction
Demo: Mediums demonstration
Class: Mini critique
HW: 4 figures abstracted in sketchbook + First exhibition review due next week!
7. March 29th
Project: Finish Abstraction Painting
HW: Bring finished abstract painting and sketchbooks
8. April 5th
Project: Critique and Introduce “Figurative / Narrative” Painting
Discussion: Lecture on figuration and narrative painting.
HW: Choose a story and illustrate a scene from that story. Bring in 4 illustrations/ideas in your sketchbook. Bring in new support.
9. April 12th
Spring Break

Discuss: Homework on Narrative Ideas
Class: Begin working on project and discuss with instructor

Class: Work on narrative painting

Project: Critique and Introduce “Favorite Food” Painting
Class: Critique and Lecture on “Favorite Food” project
HW: Write about favorite food in sketchbook. What does it remind you of? + Recipe or where to buy it, bring in photos of favorite food in sketchbook
13.May 10th
Project: “Favorite Food” Painting
Class: Layout Paintings, lighting, etc…
HW: Draw someone eating your favorite food and make a map in your sketchbook of where you would go to buy this food.
14.May 17th
Project: “Favorite Food” Painting
Class: Lecture on Relational Aesthetics and keep working on “Favorite Food” painting
HW: Second exhibition review due next week!
15.May 24th
Project: “Favorite Food” Painting
Finish all assignments in preparation for Final Critique
HW: Prepare for critique next week + sketchbook + bring in favorite food
16.May 31st
