ART 160 Painting I
Catalog Description: ART 160 develops skill, technique, and composition in drawing and painting using oil and acrylic medias.
Prerequisite: ART 150
Units – 3.0
Instructional Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Understand the basic skills necessary for traditional painting techniques such as canvas stretching, color mixing, brushwork, and painting application;
- Describe from in paint through abstraction as well as representation;
- Asses and critique her or his own work as well as that of others in regularly scheduled class critiques;
- Develop the relationship between his or her perception of the world and the technical means with which to express it;
- Experience painting as an expressive medium, emphasizing creativity and risk taking as well as technique.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define basic painting technique terms
- Complete on monochromatic painting
- Complete color scheme project
- Write a two page report on an established master painter or Museum report
ART 161 Painting II
Catalog description: ART 161 is the application of principles, theories, and techniques of drawing and painting to problems of still life, figure, landscape, and non-objective painting.
Prerequisite: ART 160
Units – 3.0
Instructional Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Describe from in paint through abstraction, as well as representation; asses and criticize his or her work as well as the work of others in schedule class critiques;
- Develop the relationship between his or her perception of the world and the technical means with which to express it;
- Experience painting as an expressive medium, emphasizing creativity and risk taking as well as technique;
- Asses and evaluate the problems and challenges inherent in various subjects involving landscape and figure painting.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Complete series of painting based on a theme
- Complete painting based on neutralization

Art 162 Advanced Painting I
Catalogue description: Art 162 explores contemporary concepts in painting while emphasizing personal interpretation and expression through individual assignments.
Prerequisite: ART161
Units – 3.0
Instructional Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Describe form in paint through abstraction as well as representation.
- Asses and critique his or her work as well as the work of others in scheduled class critiques.
- Develop the relationship between his or her perception of the world and the technical means with which to express.
- Experience painting as an expressive medium, emphasizing creativity and risk taking as well as technique.
- Assess and evaluate the problems and challenges inherent in various subjects involving landscape and figure painting.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Complete a series of paintings based on a specific theme.
- Produce a written analysis of a contemporary fine artist or exhibition

Art 163 Advanced Painting II
Catalogue description: Art 163 is a continuation of Art 163. Special problems might be assigned to the student on an individual basis. Painting problems may include figure painting and the figure in relation to architectural forms. The student is encouraged to work from imagination as well as direct visual experience. Fieldtrips to museums and galleries recommended.
Prerequisite: ART 162
Units – 3.0

Students will be able to:
- Describe form in paint through abstraction as well as representation.
- Asses and critique his or her work as well as the work of others in scheduled class critiques.
- Develop the relationship between his or her perception of the world and the technical means with which to express.
- Experience painting as an expressive medium, emphasizing creativity and risk taking as well as technique.
- Assess and evaluate the problems and challenges inherent in various subjects involving landscape and figure painting.

Student Learning Outcomes:
- Complete series of paintings based on specific theme
- Write a personal artist statement or exhibition statement.
Homework, Require Texts, and Supplies:
· You can expect 5 to 8 hours of homework a week.
· There are no texts required.
· To use in-class supplies students are required to pay $5 lab fee.
· You should budget $100 for this class in supplies.
· You may reserve a locker in the art building.
· You must bring your supplies with you to every class meeting.
Course Requirements:
Attendance/Absence/Tardiness Policy:
Absences are taken seriously. You are require to attend every class promptly and ready to learn the material. The instructor will not repeat course information, especially for technical demonstrations. Make a friend to take note if you miss class.
· Students are allowed 2 absences without penalty for the semester.
· Students will be penalized 5 points for every subsequent absence, without a doctor or dean’s note.
Grading Method (Class Requirements and Instructor Expectations):
Grading Guidelines:
· Completing assignments
· Punctuality (I start class at 5:45 PM)
· Adherence to the guidelines and principles of the specific assignment
· Following directions
· Exceptional effort
· Improvement
· Contributions to the class discussions & critiques
· Good attendance record
· Keeping your sketchbook
· Visiting two art exhibitions and Writing two reviews
· Contributing to the class blog (must make at least 10 comments through out the semester)
Critiques for each painting project:
· Guidelines will be same as above
· We will discuss your final paintings during the critiques. Guidelines will be provided about what is expected.
· Look at any sketches and homework related to the project.
Grading Scale for critiques:
4.0 A (visually striking, shows superior thought, transcends assignment)
3.0 B (visually interesting, shows original though, fulfills assignment)
2.0 C (most objectives have been met, yet some standard assignment objectives have been left unsolved, uninspired execution of assignment objectives)
1.0 D (assignment not fully understood, unresolved problems have pronounced effect on appearance of final image, does not fulfill assignment)
Homework:
· Guidelines will be same as above
· 3 points maximum per assignment
· 2 points maximum per assignment if one week late
· 1 point maximum per assignment if two weeks late
· Homework will not be accepted if more than two weeks late
Effort:
· Being there ready to start with all of your materials at the start of class.
· All requirements of the assignments are met through out the class meeting
· Each student’s personal progress
· Participation in critique and class discussions
Sketchbook:
· Your sketchbook is vital to this course.
· You are required to buy a sketchbook for this course.
· You are required to fill 80 pages by the end of the semester.
· Use your sketchbook as a source of inspiration
· Use your sketchbook to record ideas
· You may include drawings, acrylic paintings, watercolor, writing, images of work that you like, and anything inspires you. Please do not enter private information in your journal.
Exhibition Reviews:
· Visit two exhibitions and write a short one-page review of the show that you have attended
· Check the class blog on information about galleries, museums, and non-for-profit spaces that are having exhibitions
· Write a short three-paragraph review with your impressions of the show, what you found interesting or not about the work. Be prepared to share with the class.
Class Blog:
· You will find the syllabus, homework assignments and I formation about exhibits currently going on in town
· You are responsible for making 10 comments through out the semesters on information that I will be posting.
Grades in this course will reflect your performance in the following areas:

Makeup Policy:
Assignments, which are turned in on time, can always be reworked or redone. If the assignment earns a higher grade, the first grade will be thrown out.
If you miss a critique and/or a project grading, you must schedule a make up with me in advance or you will receive a grade of F on that assignment.
Students with Disabilities
All students with disabilities requiring accommodations are responsible for making arrangements in a timely manner through the Center for Students with Disabilities.
Academic Dishonesty Policy
Cheating and plagiarism are serious academic offenses. Any student suspected of academic dishonesty will receive an “F” on the test or assignment. Repeat offenses will result in the student being reported to the office of the Executive Vice President of Instruction and the Dean of Students.
Dropping:
The instructor may drop a student during the first three weeks of the semester for lack of attendance or participation. After this period, it is the student’s responsibility, not the instructor’s to officially drop the class. If you fail to attend a class in which you are enrolled and do not process the appropriate drop forms, you will receive an academic letter F for the course.
Student Conduct:
Each student at GCC must follow certain codes of behavior so that student behavior will not interfere with instruction. If any student continuously obstructs teaching or disrupts the classroom by speaking out of turn, yelling, talking excessively, plagiarizing, or cheating during tests, the instructor will assign the student an F and report the student to the Vice President of Instruction.
