Edward Hopper

Hopper's paintings might be interesting for a few of you. Follow the link to the National Gallery's resources on Hopper's work, themes, etc. They had a comprehensive retrospective of his work last year. Overall a great resource.

  1. I like how he does his painting. I like how rustic his colors are and how his brush strokes make the painting look grainy. How he did his shadows and highlights interest me because they look very defined, creating their very own shape. They almost look like they were stenciled. This is really interesting to me because this was actually what I had in mind of how I wanted to paint my own final piece. :)

  2. All his paintings are very mysterious. By looking at his painting you immediately know that something has gone wrong right at that moment then you start going around the painting to find the clues. From his paintings, I also love “Automat” ….it seems like she just heard something unpleasant and she is trying to deal with it; however, she doesn’t seem to find the solution. The emotion shown in the painting is so beautiful. I also love the background.
