Portraiture exhibit at LACMA

Alex Katz, Eric Fischl, and the Beach SceneArt of the Americas Building, Level 3
July 24, 2010–November 28, 2010

The figure and portraiture are central to the art of American realist painters Alex Katz (b. 1927) and Eric Fischl (b. 1948). Both artists are renowned for often monumental canvases that depict family members and well-to-do friends, including prominent artists, intellectuals, and actors in fashionable locations. Many of their modern-day conversation pieces, including Katz's Round Hill and Fischl's St. Barts Ralph's 70thare beach scenes. In celebration of summer and the inaugural presentation of these paintings at LACMA, this installation includes a selection of relevant works from the permanent collection and highlights the endlessly suggestive setting of the beach.

  1. For a moment I thought it is a photograph, the people in this work look so real.
It would be interesting to see it from close and see if it gives the same feeling.

  2. the elder woman in the two-piece is, i think, the most intriguing. i like how well the body is painted. all the shadows, skin colors and even muscles! incredible. The faces are even more so incredible. The simple background is just the feeling of the beach sand also. I agree with Soheila, i had to do a quick second take ~

  3. LACMA is close, so I really want to try to see this show! I love how everyone is so comfortable looking in this piece-especially the older woman in the two-piece. There are so many young women who are self-conscious about themselves and won't wear two pieces, and then there's that older woman completely comfortable with her body. It's really neat.

  4. Has anyone gone to see this exhibition yet? I know it is closing soon and just wanted to know what others impressions were of the entire show.

  5. I got a chance to see this exhibit on the 21st. It might be worth it if just to see this piece by Eric Fischl (it's pretty enormous, by the way!) If I can remember off the top of my head, there was only one other color photograph by him in the exhibit. Katz also had one piece in there which is an equally large painting. And then there were other artists who portrayed the beach, mostly through photography.
I enjoyed it--even though it was pretty small--but I would have loved to have seen more paintings, especially by Fischl.
