Alexandra Grant @ Honor Fraser in Culver City

If you have a chance to go down to Culver City take a look at this group of new paintings by Alexandra Grant. She uses text and poetic language written by her long time collaborator Michael Joyce to talk about a range of subjects. In this new exhibition entitled "Bodies" she "reveals both maps of the experience of the feminine body - a woman painter painting the physical body - but also of the exchange and relationship of an artist with her muses (poetic language, and in this case, the male writer)"
"The divided symmetry of these forms reference the physical body itself; words become eyes, ears and other physical features as variations of arches communicate notions of female physicality"
Let me know what you think!

  1. Cool, this reminds of the "Calligraffiti" exhibit they had over at the Pacific Asia Museum last year. In that exhibit though, the primary focus was to show how often-belittled, textual urban art (primarily graffiti) is similar to calligraphy, and should be regarded with the same level of appreciation.

I doubt I'll be able to make it to this exhibit but Grant's art is really interesting. I quickly googled some of her work and I really love how detailed, elaborate, and time-consuming her drawings and paintings feel. I especially love how she arranges the text in her work, with layer after layer falling on top of each other.

    Thanks for the post.

  2. Unfortunately, Culver City is far for a car-less person who relies on public transit to get places. But this looks so interesting! Her work really makes me recall what you said in class about the artwork being so big that it sort surrounds and engulfs the viewer; I think that's the aspect that attracts me most to her work.
