A Mapping related exhibit at the New Museum in NY

Take a look at this archived show at the New Museum about artists mapping New York.  http://www.newmuseum.org/assets/general/getlost/index.html

RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA

Tiravanija is the artist that I was telling about two classes ago who cooks for gallery goers and generally explores the social role of the artist. He has used food many times and his work has taken the shape of rooms for sharing meals and cooking.  This work has been theorized about by Nicolas Bourriaud as having a “relational aesthetics.”

The piece below is a map he created in relation to food, geography and a way to explore the city.  What do you think?

RIRKRIT TIRAVANIJA, UNTITLED (EATING MAP) (2007)
Artist Rirkrit Tiravanija's map details an Epicurean walk from his apartment in Alphabet City through the Lower East Side and Chinatown to the New Museum's new site on the Bowery using both words and pictures.  Along the way he experiences dim sum, kosher pickles and a Chinese haircut.

Edward Hopper

Hopper's paintings might be interesting for a few of you. Follow the link to the National Gallery's resources on Hopper's work, themes, etc. They had a comprehensive retrospective of his work last year. Overall a great resource.

Let me know what you think.

Artists Resources

A few of you have asked me about how to manage the business side of being an artist. If you are interested in making work and exhibiting or selling, sooner or later you are going to have to start finding out more about how to manage your career. Here are a couple of sites that I recommend taking a look at.

GYST was founded by Karen Atkinson to help artist keep track of there work, help with inventory, write artist statements, etc. Anything that you would need to support your practice. Take a look they some very useful services and she sells software that will help you keep organized.
www.gyst-ink.com

The Center for Cultural Innovation offers workshops that also address time management for artists, how to keep organized, how to use the web, etc. They have a workshop called the "Business Art Boot Camp" that I haven't taken personally but have heard good thing about. This organization has a lot of resources worth checking out.

I'll keep posting on this topic through out the class for those of you that are interested.

Hadley Holliday at Solway Jones Gallery

Here's a fun abstract show I recommend in Chinatown.
Hadley came out of CalArts in 2004 and is a good example of work that is playful.
Let me know what you think.

Painting II Class-Giorgio Morandi

Take a look at the work of Giorgio Mornadi. He got amazing results with a limited palette and very pared down stillifes.  It is the hue, tone and mood that he was able to produce in this work that make it outstanding. The light that emanates from these small paintings is so beautiful…

Reference on Wayne Thiebaud

I mentioned that Thiebaud's prints are at the Norton Simon but for the record he is well known for his paintings of cakes and mass produced food items. Here are a couple of paintings and the wiki link if you want to find out more about him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Thiebaud

How has he made these still life paintings very recognizable as his own? What kind of choices is he making? Do you see how he is breaking down form, could you describe it?

Sweets & Treats: Wayne Thiebaud in the Collection of the Norton Simon Museum

June 26–November 2, 2009

http://www.nortonsimon.org/
Kyla was talking about the Norton Simon Museum and what a great resource it is. I checked the website and they have a nice little show on Wayne Thebaud's print work which relates perfectly to the black and white paintings that you are working on in the painting I class. These pieces are high in contrast and break down the form of the cakes and deserts that he is depicting much in the same way that I am asking you to do when you "block in" the shapes  at the beginning of your paintings.

3 exhibits to see...

To start things off I thought I would include three very different experiences that you can find easily in Los Angeles before the month of September is out. All of these in various degrees relate to painting in some way: it could be the subject matter, a more traditional painting approach or like the central library rotunda a grand project. Let me know what you think...

LACMA

Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea
June 28–September 20, 2009
Very fun and interesting installations and sculptures on view. What did you think about one of the installations? Are there things that you can add from this work to your paintings?

Getty Villa

If you haven't been to the Getty Villa in Malibu this might be the best time to go with all the fires around our area you can take in the fresh air and see a replica of a roman villa. As you are walking through the villa don't miss the beautiful gardens where you will find these frescos flanking the area. In the second floor you will find these beautiful Roman mummy portraits made with encaustic and tempera made to commemorate the dead. One of the earliest examples of portraiture.

Downtown LA Library

Finally if you find yourself in downtown don't forget to go in and take a look at this beautiful building and it's impressive rotunda on the second floor.
