Painting III - Painting Series

The advanced painting students worked on creating a series of paintings that would communicate a specific concept or theme that they had agreed upon at the beginning of the semester. For their final they had to present their paintings to the rest of the class during the critique, write a statement and have four paintings supporting their theme. Here is all of their hard work!

Painting Series: " A Singular Journey"

The concept behind this painting series “A Singular Journey” is of how we all come into and leave this life alone. Not necessarily the state of being lonely, but how we all must create and choose our own individual paths in life. This theme in its inception was specifically inspired by the works of Edward hopper.

I was initially inspired by Edward Hopper and the themes of loneliness that many of his work seem to embody. Formally I wanted the paintings to be energetic and expressive. via the use of vivid color, simplified objects and shapes. Much like the bay painters who were bold and aggressive in their artistic judgment of color and abstract form.

I would like to surprise the viewer by utilizing a colorful palette and robust light which are not normally associated with my chosen theme of solitude but still fit it completely through by choice of imagery.

Eda's Statement

Eda has done a really great job on her statement and I thought it might be helpful for the Advanced students, that are also working on their statement, to see it before tomorrow's class. Please let us know your thoughts. Thanks!

Painting Series: "Another Day"

In my most recent series entitled Another Day I tried to look at the world around me in new ways, particularly focusing on the use of color in a transcendent manner. I try to find the ordinary in everyday life and expose its extra ordinary aspects. In each of the pieces in this series there is a central figure that is in one way or another coming through something whether it is a web or darkness. Behind each figure is a representation of that which the main character is emerging from. For instance, in the painting featuring a woman sitting behind a spider web I used the web as a metaphor to show that we all have been brought up to follow certain rules and regulations, which have been rooted in our minds through family, culture, media etc., and we have been carrying those thoughts without realizing their consequences. I have realized that I have the power to change my habits by simply changing my thoughts. I wanted to see how I could express the struggles of overcoming adversity using a visual object as a barrier.

I have been inspired by writers such as Eckhart Tolle, and James Allen and great painters such as Edward Hopper and Rembrandt. I tried to learn from their writings and paintings to create my own personal style. I experimented various mediums; however, I can communicate the best with oil. The process of my paintings is to show the characters on the paintings through movement and light. I enjoyed painting the figures; however, the most exciting part is including objects such as colorful big shape, the web and the curtain.

“Another Day” is more than just a series of paintings; it is a representation of my daily accomplishments. Each day is different in its unique way and for me leaving behind the old ideas and moving forward has been an exhilarating experience, which is mirrored in my paintings.

Kendra's Painting

Kendra can't make it to our last class but she has been working hard on this last painting. Could you give her some feed back... I know that she would appreciated.

I've blurred the hands and i hope i didnt go over board. The lighting is not good here after the sun goes down. So this photo is not great but I did stop working when there was still good sun light.

I blurred and subdued the background. Whats next, besides the hands?
Quick hurry! Any suggestions?
